Hot on the heels of Emirates Airways' president calling on Boeing to update its 777, Qatar Airways' chief executive says Airbus should offer new engines on its single-aisle A320 aircraft.

Upgrading to more efficient Pratt & Whitney geared-fan engines would keep Airbus ahead of Boeing and fend off Bombardier's CSeries jet, which also will use those engines, Akbar al-Baker told Bloomberg. "This development would put them at least 10 years ahead of the competition on the single-aisle aircraft and most definitely kill the CSeries program."
Al-Baker said talks with Bombardier about a CSeries order are being held up over "a few figures."
Al-Baker spoke with Bloomberg during the world's first revenue flight with gas-to-liquid kerosene. He also said in the report that he's confident in the latest schedule for Boeing's much-delayed 787 Dreamliner and more confident that Airbus' rival A350 XWB will learn from Boeing's mistakes on the 787 and deliver with fewer delays.
Qatar Airways has 30 787s and 80 A350s on order.
